What we work on · Boundaries with family

Therapy for setting boundaries in an Indian family

In a lot of Indian families there is no clear line between inner circle and outer circle. A cousin's wife knows your salary, an aunt has an opinion on your pregnancy, a group chat decides how your wedding is run, and saying no to any of it feels like an insult to people who love you.

Boundaries advice written elsewhere assumes you can simply state a limit and move on. Here, the same sentence can be read as disrespect. So the work is not learning to say no. It is finding the version of no that your family can survive and you can hold.

What this often looks like

  • ·Family members knowing details of your money, marriage or health that you never chose to share
  • ·Explaining your decisions to people who were never involved in them
  • ·Saying yes to visits, loans and favours you cannot afford
  • ·Guilt for hours after any small refusal
  • ·Your partner and your family pulling you in opposite directions
  • ·No space in your week that belongs only to you

What we actually do in sessions

  • ·We map your actual circles: who genuinely belongs in a decision and who has simply always been included.
  • ·We decide what information is yours, what is your marriage's, and what is shared.
  • ·We write the specific sentences for the phone call, the group chat, the visit.
  • ·We prepare for the reaction, because the first no is usually tested.
  • ·We work on the guilt afterwards, which is the part that makes most people fold.
  • ·Nobody is cut off unless you decide that yourself. The aim is a workable relationship, not distance.

Common questions

Will therapy push me to go no contact?

No. For most people the goal is a relationship that continues without costing them their health or their marriage. Distance is one option among several, not the recommendation.

How do I set a boundary without being called disrespectful?

Usually by changing the delivery, not the limit. Warmth, brevity, and no long justification travel much better in Indian families than a well-argued case.

My partner and my parents want different things. Who do I choose?

That framing is the trap. Sessions work on agreeing a line as a couple first, so neither of you is negotiating alone with the other's family.

Do we need to do this as a couple?

Not necessarily. Most people start alone, and one person changing how they respond usually shifts the pattern. Couples sessions can follow.
