What we work on · A relationship you cannot tell family about
Therapy when you cannot tell your family about your partner
You are in a relationship that matters, and the people who raised you do not know it exists. Or they know a version of it. Holidays get complicated, photos get untagged, your partner waits in the car, and every family call has a subject you steer around.
This is common for Indians living abroad, where the person you fell for may be from another community, caste, faith, country or gender than your family imagined. The pressure is not only their possible disapproval. It is holding two lives at once and having nobody who sees both.

What this often looks like
- ·Editing photos, plans and stories before family sees them
- ·Your partner feeling like a secret, and starting to resent it
- ·Festivals and holidays becoming a negotiation instead of a break
- ·Answering questions about marriage timelines with things that are not quite true
- ·Fear of a specific relative finding out first
- ·Losing track of what you actually want, separate from what will keep the peace
What we actually do in sessions
- ·We look clearly at the real risk, from awkwardness to genuine safety concerns, because those need very different plans.
- ·We separate your decision from your timeline. Choosing to tell them is not the same as telling them this month.
- ·If disclosure is the plan, we sequence it: who first, in what words, in what setting, with what support ready.
- ·We look at the cost the secrecy is placing on your relationship, and what your partner needs while you decide.
- ·We prepare for the responses you can predict, including silence, ultimatums and emotional escalation.
- ·If disclosure is not safe or not yet right, we work on living with that honestly rather than in constant dread.

Common questions
Will I be told I have to tell my parents?
No. You set the goal. Some people come to prepare for the conversation, some to decide whether to have it, and some to stop the waiting from taking over their life.
How do I know when to tell them?
Readiness is usually less about the perfect moment and more about being settled in your own decision, having your partner aligned, and having support in place for the weeks after.
My family may react badly. Is there help for that?
Yes. Sessions plan for the aftermath as much as the announcement, including practical support and, where there is any risk to your safety, appropriate local resources.
Can my partner join?
Yes. Many couples do a few sessions together on this, especially when the secrecy is straining the relationship itself.
