What we work on · NRI loneliness

Therapy for loneliness and homesickness abroad

You moved for a reason and the reason was good. The job happened, the degree happened, the visa happened. And still there are evenings that feel unbearably empty, and video calls where you say everything is fine.

Diaspora loneliness is specific. It is not a lack of people. It is a lack of people who know your context without translation, plus the ache of missing weddings, illnesses, and ordinary Tuesdays at home.

What this often looks like

  • ·Feeling unknown even in a full social calendar
  • ·Dreading weekends or evenings
  • ·Guilt about missing family events and milestones
  • ·Scrolling instead of sleeping
  • ·Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
  • ·Not wanting to admit to anyone back home that it is hard

What we actually do in sessions

  • ·We name what you are actually grieving, which is often more than a place.
  • ·We look at whether this is loneliness, low mood, or both.
  • ·We build a realistic social and routine plan for the country you live in.
  • ·We work on the guilt attached to being far away.
  • ·We make space for you to stop performing that you are fine.

Want a starting point before you talk to anyone?

Common questions

Is homesickness really a reason for therapy?

Yes. Untreated, it commonly slides into depression, drinking more, or withdrawing entirely. It is a very good reason to talk to someone.

Can we meet across time zones?

Yes. Komel holds late slots by design, so clients in North America, Europe, the Gulf, and Australia can all find a workable time.

Will therapy make me want to move back?

The aim is clarity, not a particular decision. Some people settle in, some plan a move, and both are valid outcomes.
