Therapy for in-law conflict in Indian families

In-law conflict rarely looks like one argument. It looks like a comment at dinner, a decision made without you, a partner who says 'just let it go', and a slow build of resentment nobody names out loud.

In Indian families, the usual advice does not help. You are not choosing between yourself and your family. You are trying to hold a marriage, your parents, your partner's parents, and your own sanity at once, often across two countries and two sets of expectations.

What this often looks like

  • ·Dreading visits, calls, or festivals
  • ·Feeling criticised about cooking, money, work, or parenting
  • ·Your partner defending their parents instead of hearing you
  • ·Decisions about your home, money, or children being made by others
  • ·Guilt whenever you set a boundary
  • ·Arguments with your partner that are really about their family

What we actually do in sessions

  • ·We separate the actual issue from the years of accumulated hurt around it.
  • ·We work out which boundaries are realistic for your family, not a textbook family.
  • ·We practise the exact sentences you will use, in the tone you can actually manage.
  • ·We look at your partner's position without making you the villain or the victim.
  • ·We build a plan for the next visit or call, not just insight.

Want a starting point before you talk to anyone?

Common questions

Do I need my partner in the session?

No. Most people start alone. Individual work often changes the dynamic on its own, and you can bring your partner in later if it helps.

Will I be told to cut off my in-laws?

No. The goal is not distance for its own sake. It is a workable relationship that does not cost you your health or your marriage.

Does Komel understand joint family dynamics?

Yes. She works with Indian and South Asian families across the UAE, UK, US, Canada, Australia, and India, and she does not need the culture explained to her first.
