Indian psychologist online: what the title means and what to look for
Most people searching for an Indian psychologist online want one of three different professionals. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe. A clinical psychologist assesses and diagnoses, and in India must hold RCI registration. A psychotherapist or counsellor delivers the talking therapy itself. If you want structured talking therapy for anxiety, low mood, family conflict or a life decision, a trained and supervised psychotherapist is what you are looking for, and the title on the page matters less than the qualification behind it.
This page explains the titles, so you can tell which professional your situation actually calls for, and check that whoever you book is who they say they are.

The four titles, and who does what
They are not interchangeable, and only one of them can prescribe.
- Psychiatrist
- A medical doctor with postgraduate psychiatric training. Diagnoses, prescribes and manages medication, and handles severe or acute presentations. Book one if medication is on the table, if an existing prescription needs reviewing, or if functioning has dropped sharply.
- Clinical psychologist
- Trained in psychological assessment, diagnosis and therapy. In India this requires RCI registration, and elsewhere an equivalent licence or registration. Book one if you need formal assessment, psychometric testing, or a diagnostic report that a third party will accept.
- Psychotherapist
- Trained to deliver therapy in specific named models such as CBT, DBT, SFBT or REBT, usually working under supervision. Book one for the ongoing work: anxiety, low mood, trauma processing, emotional regulation, relationship and family patterns.
- Counsellor
- Typically shorter-term, present-focused support around a specific situation such as a bereavement, a decision or a work crisis. The boundary with psychotherapy is blurry in practice and depends on the individual's training.
Which one you actually need
- Medication, or symptoms severe enough to affect safety or basic functioning: psychiatrist first.
- A formal diagnosis, an ADHD or autism assessment, or a report for an employer, school or court: a licensed clinical psychologist or psychiatrist where you live.
- Persistent anxiety, low mood, anger, procrastination, trauma memories or relationship patterns: a trained psychotherapist.
- One specific decision or event you need to think through clearly: a counsellor, a psychotherapist, or coaching.
- Career, leadership or performance from a stable baseline: executive coaching rather than therapy.
- Immediate danger to yourself or someone else: an emergency line, right now, not a booking form.
What Indian and South Asian clients often want that a title does not capture
The most common thing people describe, across the UK, the Gulf, North America, Singapore and Australia, is exhaustion at having to explain their own family before they can talk about the problem. Not disagreement from the therapist, just the overhead. Who gets consulted about a marriage, why the in-law relationship is structural rather than a preference, why moving out is not a neutral suggestion, what visa dependence does to a marriage, why a career change reads as a betrayal.
That context is a competence, not a nicety, and it is not covered by any professional title. It is also not a substitute for training. A practitioner who shares your background but cannot name the model they work in, or has no supervision, is not the safer choice. Ask about both, in the same conversation.
The other thing titles do not capture: hours. A therapist whose latest slot is 6pm in their own time zone is unusable if you are nine hours away and working. Session hours decide whether therapy actually continues past week three.
How to verify anyone before you pay
Four checks, all of which should take under five minutes on their own site.
- Named qualification with the institution behind it, not just a course title.
- Named therapeutic training: CBT, DBT, EMDR, psychodynamic, whichever, and the ability to explain why that model suits your problem.
- A stated supervision arrangement, which is what accountability looks like for a therapist not covered by a statutory register.
- An explicit statement of what they do not claim and who they are not the right fit for. This is the single strongest honesty signal on any therapy site.
- Where a statutory register exists, check it: RCI in India, HCPC or BACP in the UK, state licensing boards in the US, provincial colleges in Canada.
Where this practice is not the right answer
- You need a diagnosis, psychometric testing, or a report for an employer, school, insurer or court.
- You need medication prescribed, reviewed or managed.
- You need a provider licensed or registered in your own country for reimbursement.
- You are in active crisis, or you need same-day or round-the-clock cover.
- You have a severe or acute presentation requiring a treatment team or medical monitoring.
Common questions
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychotherapist?
A psychologist holds a degree in psychology, and a clinical psychologist is trained specifically to assess and diagnose mental health conditions. In India that requires RCI registration. A psychotherapist is trained to deliver therapy itself, in one or more named models such as CBT or DBT. The overlap is large in practice: much of what a clinical psychologist does in a session is psychotherapy. The difference that matters to you is whether you need a formal diagnosis and report, which is assessment work, or whether you need ongoing therapy.
Do I need a psychiatrist instead?
See a psychiatrist if medication is likely part of the answer, if you already take psychiatric medication and it needs reviewing, or if symptoms are severe enough that safety and functioning are affected. Psychiatrists are medical doctors and are the only ones who can prescribe. Many people work with a psychiatrist for medication and a therapist for the talking work at the same time, and that combination is often better than either alone.
Can an Indian psychologist see me if I live abroad?
For privately paid talking therapy, usually yes, and it is very common across the diaspora. Where it stops working is anything that needs local standing: insurance reimbursement, a sick note, a diagnostic report accepted by your employer or school, or prescribing. Those need a provider licensed and registered in the country you live in.
How do I verify an online psychologist is real?
Look for four things. A named qualification with the institution. A named therapeutic training, not just a list of buzzwords. A stated supervision arrangement, because supervised practitioners are accountable to someone. And a clear statement of what they do not claim. If a site has testimonials and prices but no credentials page, that is the wrong way round. For clinical psychologists practising in India, RCI registration can be checked on the Council's register.
Is Komel Kaur a psychologist?
Komel holds an M.A. in Psychology and works as a psychotherapist and executive coach, with certified training in CBT, DBT, SFBT and REBT, practising under clinical supervision. She is not a clinical psychologist and not a psychiatrist, does not diagnose, and does not prescribe or manage medication. If you need diagnostic assessment or medication, she will say so and point you toward the right professional.
How much does an Indian psychologist online cost?
Private sessions with practitioners based in India typically run INR 1,000 to 3,500 per session in 2026. Diaspora-focused practitioners charging in USD usually sit between USD 40 and 100. Licensed local therapists in the UK, US, Canada and Australia usually cost USD 90 to 200 privately. Komel charges USD 70 for a 60 minute session, USD 49 as a new client offer, and USD 35 for a 30 minute intro consultation.
Will sessions be in Hindi or English?
Either, and you do not have to choose in advance. Komel works in English, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Kashmiri, and sessions often move between languages, which matters when the feeling only really exists in one of them.
Can I check whether I need help before booking anything?
Yes. The site has free clinician-validated screening questionnaires, including GAD-7 for anxiety, PHQ-9 for depression, ASRS v1.1 for adult ADHD and PCL-5 for trauma, scored instantly. They are screening tools and cannot diagnose, but they give you a defensible starting point and something concrete to bring to a first conversation.

When this is not the right fit
Komel is a psychotherapist and executive coach based in the UAE, working online worldwide. Sessions are private and self-funded, and cannot be claimed on local insurance or used for legal, medical or workplace reports. She does not prescribe or manage medication.
This is not an emergency service. If you are in immediate danger, use a local crisis line rather than a booking request. Her credentials and training and the full scope of practice are published.
